New Jersey Students Learning Standard for Social Studies (6.2) require the teaching of early civilizations in middle school. This workshop will offer middle school teachers a meaningful theme around which to consider ancient middle eastern, Asian, Greek, Roman and American civilizations: the development of early democratic practices and ideas. This will provide an excellent background for students to better understand the sources of some of the governmental structure and practices in the United States. The content will be based on the Development of Law Series by the Constitutional Rights Foundation (now "Teach Democracy!"), "Of Codes & Crowns: From the Ancient World to the Renaissance".
The workshop will be held at Rutgers University's Busch Campus Center, room 174, in Piscataway. It will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude by 3:00 p.m. Morning coffee, lunch and internet access will be provided. Teachers will receive five hours of professional development credit.
A confirmation message should appear after you finish submitting your registration. Please print for your records if you need it. Each workshop is limited by the venue to 48 participants.
Parking information will be provided via email approximately one week before the workshop.
