New Jersey’s Legislature

Information: Students will be able to: describe the role of the Legislature; identify the requirements being a member of the New Jersey State Legislature; explain how a bill becomes a law in New Jersey; identify a public policy issue; participate in a legislative hearing on an issue affecting and upcoming election, law use, environment, health or other issue; collaborate on the development of a proposal to address a problem facing New Jersey.

Information: Students will be able to: identify the role of the judiciary; explain why judicial independence is important; describe how the New Jersey judicial system in New Jersey is structured; examine the jurisdiction of the New Jersey State Supreme Court; compare and contrast the proceedings of New Jersey’s trial and appellate courts; engage in a moot court proceeding.

Information: Students will be able to: explain changes in societal attitudes towards the role of women; analyze and evaluate how New Jersey women have contributed to the improvement of society.

Information: Students will be able to: identify, through an analysis of song lyrics from various time periods, evidence of “regional identity” in the works of local musical artists (in the form of specific quotes and phrases that refer to or describe life in New Jersey); explain how the beliefs/values/attitudes expressed in each song relate to its historical climate; describe certain recurring “themes” in local music and how those thematic elements come together to create a “Jersey sound”; analyze why and how that sound has changed and evolved over time, citing examples to support their conclusion.
